The AAS Stands with Yuendumu

Published on 1/13/2020

In the wake of the Nov 9, 2019 police shooting of Kumunjayi Walker at Yuendumu, we issued this AAS Stands with Yuendumu statement

Originally posted on Nov 21, we indicated that the AAS was working on an initiative to bring anthropological perspectives to bear on the wider issues highlighted by the shooting. At the AAS AGM in December, we announced that Dr Yasmine Musharbash will be editing a special issue of TAJA, to bring together various critical perspectives on this event, including plans for a Warlpiri-authored piece.

In the meantime, the best and most immediate way to support the community is by donating to the Justice for Walker fundraising campaign (for legal costs). This page is also a good source for the latest on meetings with lawyers at Yuendumu and developments of court proceedings.

Below the Statement is a *just updated* list of links to useful sources of information on the shooting, including the fundraising campaign, a live-feed from Kumunjayi’s cousin, and news articles and commentaries. All members are encouraged to email Jo at aas@anu.edu.au with suggestions for additions to this list.
