AAS Institutional Representatives Forum

As of December 2016, the Institutional Representatives Forum replaces the old Heads of Department group within the AAS.

In Australian universities today, there are fewer and fewer ‘departments of anthropology’. This group was renamed to cover joint departments (e.g., departments of anthropology and sociology, anthropology and development studies) as well as contexts where anthropology is taught but not named in an institution’s organisational structure (e.g., general social science programs).

The new Institutional Representatives Forum also allows for representatives of anthropology to come from joint departments where the Head of Department may be from another discipline. Overall, the forum aims to widen the range of representation within the AAS.

Being an AAS Institutional Representative

Institutional Representatives are asked to:

  • Attend the annual meeting of the Institutional Representatives Forum, which is held at the AAS Conference

  • Organise nominations for the annual AAS prizes for best PhD and Honours theses

  • Be a point of contact through which information can be distributed between the faculty and students of anthropological institutions/departments, and the AAS Executive Committee, representatives of ANSA, and the editors of the AAS Newsletter, The Q.
